Car Won't Start? Here's What to Check (Troubleshooting Guide)
Your car won't start and you're stuck. Before you panic, let's work through the most common causes and what you can do right now.
Step 1: What Happens When You Turn the Key?
The sound (or lack of sound) tells us a lot about what's wrong:
Clicking Sound or Rapid Clicking
What it means: This is the most common sign of a dead or dying battery. The clicking is your starter motor trying to engage but not getting enough power.
What to do: You need a new battery or a jump start. If a jump start works but the car dies again soon after, the battery can't hold a charge and needs replacing.
Single Click, Then Nothing
What it means: Usually a starter motor issue, but can also be a completely dead battery.
What to do: Try a jump start first. If that doesn't work, you'll need a mechanic to check the starter.
Complete Silence - No Sound at All
What it means: Either the battery is completely flat, or there's a connection issue.
What to do: Check your battery terminals. Are they corroded (white/green buildup) or loose? Clean and tighten them. If that doesn't help, you need battery replacement.
Engine Cranks Slowly, Then Dies
What it means: Battery is weak but not completely dead. Often happens on cold mornings or after short trips.
What to do: A jump start might get you going, but the battery is on its way out. Get it tested and likely replaced.
Engine Cranks Normally But Won't Fire
What it means: This is less likely to be the battery. Possible fuel, spark plug, or other engine issues.
What to do: Check if you have fuel! If yes, you'll need a mechanic to diagnose further.
Step 2: Quick Checks You Can Do Now
Check Your Dashboard Lights
Turn the key to the 'on' position (without starting). Do your dashboard lights come on?
- Lights are bright: Battery has some charge. Issue might be elsewhere.
- Lights are dim or flickering: Battery is low on charge.
- No lights at all: Battery is dead or disconnected.
Check the Battery Terminals
Pop the bonnet and look at your battery. See white, blue, or green crusty buildup on the terminals? That's corrosion, and it can prevent your car from starting even with a good battery. Learn more about keeping your battery terminals clean.
Check If Anything Was Left On
Did you leave your headlights on? Interior light? Phone charger? These can drain your battery overnight.
Step 3: Your Options Right Now
Option 1: Try a Jump Start
If you have jumper leads and a friend with a working car, a jump start might get you going. But remember: if your battery is more than 3-4 years old and keeps dying, it needs replacing.

How Long Do Car Batteries Last?
In Brisbane's heat, most batteries last 3-4 years (compared to 4-5 years in cooler climates). If your battery is approaching this age and showing any symptoms, it's better to replace it at your convenience than get stranded at the worst possible time.
Prevent Future Battery Problems
- Get your battery tested every 6-12 months
- Keep terminals clean of corrosion
- Avoid lots of short trips (doesn't give the battery time to recharge)
- Turn off all lights and accessories before leaving the car
- If parking in direct sun, consider a heat-resistant AGM battery
