Flat Battery After a Cruise? Brisbane Cruise Terminal Guide

Cruising out of Brisbane means leaving the car behind for anything from a few nights to a couple of weeks. That's plenty of time for a tired battery to go flat, and the last thing you want after getting off the ship is a car that just clicks. Here's what to know before you go, and what to do if it happens.

Where Do Cruise Passengers Park in Brisbane?

The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal is at Luggage Point, near Pinkenba at the mouth of the Brisbane River. It isn't serviced by public transport, so many passengers drive and park on site. According to the Port of Brisbane, there are more than 1,200 spaces across three paid car parks run by Wilson Parking:

One detail catches people out: the car parks are only open to the public on days a ship is in port. If you need to get to your car on another day, you have to contact Wilson Parking first and extra fees may apply. Check the Port of Brisbane website for current details before you travel.

Why Cars Go Flat While You're at Sea

A modern car never fully switches off. The alarm, central locking, keyless entry and computer memory all draw a small amount of power while it sits. A healthy battery copes with that for two or three weeks. An older one may not, and a cruise of 7 to 14 nights sits right in that danger zone.

Heat makes it worse. Most bays at the terminal are open-air, and a car sitting in the Brisbane sun for a week gets very hot under the bonnet. Heat speeds up the chemical wear inside a battery, which is why Brisbane batteries often only last three to four years. If yours is already that age, a week on the wharf can be the thing that finishes it off.

Before You Sail: A Quick Checklist

• Know your battery's age. If it's over three years old or has been slow to start lately, get it tested before the trip. We do a free battery and alternator test when we come out.
• Book a covered bay if you can. Shade won't save a dying battery, but it takes some heat stress off.
• Turn everything off. Unplug dash cams, phone chargers and anything else wired to the car. Check the interior lights and boot light are off.
• Save our number. Put 0423 845 744 in your phone so it's there when you walk off the ship.

What Happens When You Call Us

Tell us which car park you're in (P1, P2 or P3), your row or bay, and your car's make and model. We bring the right battery with us, test your battery and charging system at the car, and replace the battery if it has failed. We use a memory saver so your radio and settings stay put, and we take the old battery away for recycling. You pay once the job's done, by card, cash or EFTPOS.

There's no call-out fee when we replace your battery. A call-out fee only applies if you book us out to replace the battery and then decide not to go ahead once we've arrived.

How Much Does It Cost?

Batteries start from $240 installed for small cars, and from $330 for 4WDs and large SUVs, which many cruise passengers drive.
