How to Prepare Your Car Battery for Brisbane Summer
Brisbane summers are brutal — on you and your car battery. While most people think cold weather kills batteries, it's actually heat that does the most damage. Here's how to prepare your battery for the season ahead.
Why Summer Is Tough on Batteries
Heat accelerates chemical reactions: The reactions inside your battery speed up in heat. Short term, this gives you more power. Long term, it wears out the battery faster.
Evaporation: The water inside your battery (even "maintenance-free" batteries have some) evaporates faster in Brisbane's heat, leading to internal damage.
Increased electrical load: You're running the aircon constantly, the kids have devices charging, and the cooling fans are working overtime. More drain means more stress on the battery.
Pre-Summer Checklist
1. Get a battery test (free)
Most auto shops offer free battery tests, and so do we. A proper test measures cranking amps and overall health. If your battery is borderline, replace it now — before you're stuck in a 35°C car park.
2. Check for corrosion
Look at your battery terminals. Any white, green, or blue buildup? Clean it with baking soda and water, then apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly.
3. Inspect the case
Is your battery case swollen, cracked, or leaking? These are signs of heat damage and the battery needs replacing immediately.
4. Consider your battery's age
If your battery is 3+ years old, it's approaching the end of its reliable life in Queensland. 4+ years? You're on borrowed time.
Summer Driving Tips
- Park in shade: A cooler engine bay means a cooler battery. Use covered parking at shopping centres when available.
- Use a windscreen shade: Reduces cabin temperature and decreases aircon load when you get back in.
- Run the engine before switching on aircon: Let the alternator start charging before adding the aircon load.
- Avoid short trips during heatwaves: If possible, combine errands rather than making multiple short trips.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Slow cranking, especially after the car's been sitting in the sun
- Dim headlights or interior lights
- Electrical accessories behaving strangely
- Battery warning light on the dashboard
- Swollen battery case
