Flood water causes battery problems in several ways: it introduces conductive contaminants (salt, minerals, mud) across the battery terminals which can cause short circuits and drain the battery; it corrodes the terminal connections and cable clamps; in non-sealed batteries, flood water can dilute the electrolyte acid, reducing the battery's ability to hold charge; and submerged batteries can develop internal shorts as water seeps through vent caps. Even batteries that appear physically intact after flooding may have compromised internal chemistry and should be replaced as a precaution.
