💡Common Battery Situation

Left Your Lights On? Battery Flat?

We've all done it — left the headlights, interior light, or boot light on overnight, and now the battery is completely flat. If a jump start gets you going, great. But if your battery was already aging, draining it to zero may have killed it for good. We can test and replace it on the spot.

Left Lights On — Battery Flat

Leaving your headlights or an interior light on overnight is one of the most common causes of a flat battery. Headlights can drain a fully charged battery in 4-8 hours, while interior lights might take 12-24 hours. If your battery was in good condition, a jump start will usually get you going and the alternator will recharge it during driving. But if the battery was already weakening (over 3 years old), a deep discharge from leaving lights on can permanently damage the cells. This is when a jump start either won't work at all or will only get you a few kilometres before the car dies again. We carry testing equipment to tell you whether your battery can recover or needs replacing.

What to Do Right Now

1

Try a jump start first

If you have jump leads or a portable pack, try starting the car. If it starts and stays running, drive for at least 30 minutes to recharge.

2

If the jump doesn't work, call us

Phone 0423 845 744 — we'll bring testing equipment and a replacement battery.

3

Don't turn the car off immediately

If you successfully jump-start it, don't turn it off for at least 30 minutes. The alternator needs time to put charge back into the battery.

4

Get the battery tested within a week

Even if a jump start worked, have the battery tested to check if it was permanently damaged by the deep discharge.

Why This Happens

Your car's headlights draw around 10-15 amps, which can flatten a standard 60Ah battery in 4-6 hours. Interior lights draw less (about 1-2 amps) but can still kill a battery overnight. When a lead-acid battery is discharged below about 50%, the lead plates begin to sulfate — a chemical process where lead sulfate crystals form on the plates and harden over time. This permanently reduces the battery's capacity. A younger, healthy battery may recover from one deep discharge, but an older battery (3+ years) often can't.

How to Prevent This

  • Always double-check your lights when parking — walk around the car and look
  • If your car doesn't have auto-off headlights, make it a habit to check before walking away
  • Set a reminder on your phone if you've parked in a dark area where you'd use headlights
  • Consider upgrading to LED interior lights — they draw less power and are less likely to kill your battery

Frequently Asked Questions

Will leaving my lights on for one night ruin the battery?

If the battery is under 2-3 years old and was in good health, one overnight drain probably won't cause permanent damage — a jump start and a good drive should recover it. But if the battery is older, a single deep discharge can be the final straw. We recommend getting it tested after any deep discharge.

How do I know if the battery is permanently damaged?

Our technician can test the battery's CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) and internal resistance to determine if it's recoverable. If the test shows the battery has lost more than 30% of its rated capacity, replacement is recommended.

Why doesn't my car turn off the lights automatically?

Many newer cars do have auto-off headlights, but not all. Interior lights, boot lights, and glove box lights often don't have auto-off. If your car doesn't have this feature, it's a manual check every time you park.

How quickly can leaving headlights on drain a battery?

Standard halogen headlights can flatten a healthy battery in 4-6 hours. LED headlights draw less power and might last 8-12 hours. Parking lights only might last 12-24 hours. Interior lights are the slowest drain but will still kill a battery overnight.
